"Materialists is rickety stuff, buckling from beginning to end beneath its maker’s weighty aspirations."
"Filmmaker Celine Song dons a metaphorical technician’s coat, does a chemistry test on three gorgeous movie stars—Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal—and then waits for the lab results. Sad to say, the romcom fizz didn’t make it."
"Materialists lacks the satisfyingly drawn characters of Austen, the elegant wit and spite of the screwballs -- and the chewy complexity and formal brio of the exquisite Past Lives."
"Why does no one in this film have agency to find value in themselves without validation from someone else? Frankly, it’s weird to see the regression of the idea that marriage is the only thing that matters in a person’s life."
"The opposite of a feel-good, rom com or romantic drama. Right from the start, the film signals true love is an illusion and is more of a business transaction. Materialists is seriously deficient in heart or charm."

Actors are nice to look at. That’s it. Everything else was garbage. Watch their press tour, it’s drastically better than the movie itself.
ROMCOMS my favorite always
Decent film for me and my girlfriend, we liked it.
Dakota can't play a poor girl. Change lanes (see splitsville).
Dakota Johnson gives a beautifully understated performance.
Watching Materialists felt like sitting through a script that could’ve been written by a teenager who just discovered the concept of “money isn’t everything.” The entire premise boils down to one thinly stretched theme: choosing between wealth, status, and shiny distractions versus a modest, grounded life. That’s it. Nothing more. There’s no nuance, no exploration of why characters might be seduced by superficiality, and no deeper commentary on what “meaningful” living really means. The dialogue circles endlessly around the same point, hammering home its message with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. Materialists mistakes simplicity for profundity, leaving the audience with nothing to chew on except the reminder that meaningful stories require more than a one-line moral.
